Our Approach
Building Workshop is a multi-award-winning architecture practice specialising in the creative adaptation and restoration of rural buildings. We love working with project teams to breathe new life into buildings and bring them back into meaningful use as practical and inspiring places to live, work and be. We generally hear from people with three types of building-related problems:
I want to transform or repurpose my building
My building is broken, ruined, damaged and beyond repair
I have found the perfect site and I need a new building
Creative Collaboration
Sometimes there is a building and a dream, but not a clear plan, which is also fine! Before the fun and creative work begins, we work together to create a brief—understanding all of the pieces of the project: the building, people involved, aspirations and constraints (geographical, financial, policy-related).
Each Building Workshop project is unique. Site, buildings, client, brief, budget and project goals are only a few of the elements that vary from one project to another. We enjoy getting to know and understand our clients and working together throughout the process to achieve their project vision.
Our Process
We take a holistic approach, considering the building and the bigger picture - the setting, client, project objectives, budget and long-term plans - in order to inform designs that best serve the client, their business and the landscape.
We have a creative, collaborative and visual process. We use the latest 3D computer software and handmade models to develop designs and to ensure that everyone can visualise and fully understand the proposed designs and the project well before building work starts. This allows everyone to contribute to the design process and avoids costly changes during construction.
Whether a new home, a conversion, a place of work or an extension, our designs focus on simplicity, natural daylight, flow and a strong inside-outside connection.
